Tucked away in the quieter edges of Noida, Anahat by Ant Studio unfolds like a measured dialogue between history and modernity. Conceived as an extension to an existing farmhouse, the project neither imitates nor replaces what came before. Instead, it grows around it — a zinc-clad spiral that wraps, shields, and reveals, breathing new life into a familiar domestic setting.

Reinterpreting Continuity

Ant Studio, led by Monish Siripurapu, is known for its explorations of climate, craft, and computation. In Anahat, these concerns converge into an architectural gesture that seeks fluidity — a continuity of form and of time.

“It’s a conversation between the past and the parametric,” says Siripurapu, describing the extension as a bridge between vernacular sensibility and digital precision.

The project doesn’t begin from the blank slate of demolition. Instead, it acknowledges the embodied memory of the old farmhouse. The new form, with its gentle curvature and vertical layering, builds upon that memory, turning structural limitations into expressive opportunities.

Form and Geometry

A continuous spiral defines the project — an ascending shell that originates from the ground floor and coils upward, enclosing spaces in an organic loop. The façade is composed of zinc panels, punctuated by parametrically designed louvers that filter light while maintaining privacy.

Each louvre’s angle was digitally simulated to respond to solar orientation, allowing the shell to breathe while protecting the interiors from heat. The result is a façade that behaves less like a wall and more like a living skin, constantly negotiating between openness and shelter.

Material and Atmosphere

The interior contrasts the metallic precision of the exterior with tactile warmth. Surfaces of lime plaster, brick, and terrazzo temper the light that enters through the spiral’s perforations. The palette reinforces Ant Studio’s larger ethos — a belief that material honesty can coexist with computational intent.

Natural light plays a crucial compositional role. Morning light filters through the angled louvers in slender beams, while the evening sun scatters a softer amber glow, tracing patterns across the curved interior walls. This interplay of light and surface animates the structure throughout the day, giving it a quiet rhythm that aligns with its name — Anahat, meaning unstruck sound or the eternal resonance in Sanskrit.

Climate and Context

Despite its sculptural presence, Anahat remains a deeply contextual and climate-responsive building. The envelope’s porosity encourages cross-ventilation, while shaded verandas and intermediate terraces act as thermal buffers.

Existing trees were carefully preserved; one of them even penetrates the new shell, becoming an anchor of memory and a climatic moderator. Courtyards and voids allow the house to breathe vertically, reducing dependence on artificial cooling systems.

Through computational design, these passive strategies were refined — testing louver density, shading performance, and daylight factors before execution.

Craft and Construction

The extension’s zinc-clad structure demanded precision fabrication. Computational modelling supported coordination between structure, enclosure, and interior finishes — a workflow indicative of BIM-assisted processes, though never at the expense of craft. Ant Studio’s approach retains a handmade sensibility, where digital tools are not ends in themselves but frameworks to enhance material intimacy and construction efficiency.

Spatial Experience

Circulation within Anahat follows the spiral’s logic — a slow ascent through light and shadow. The central courtyard functions as both a visual focus and a climatic lung, connecting all levels through air and sightlines. The journey through the house becomes an unfolding narrative — of compression and release, opacity and transparency.

Each pause offers a framed view of the tree, of light grazing metal, or of the distant fields beyond. It is this layering of thresholds that defines the building’s experiential strength.

Architectural Significance

Anahat stands as a quiet provocation — suggesting that sustainability and computational design need not belong solely to large corporate typologies. When integrated into domestic scale, these methods can offer new ways of inhabiting the familiar — precise yet poetic, efficient yet empathetic.

The project embodies Ant Studio’s larger pursuit: to reconcile nature, technology, and memory through form. It is less about replacing the old than about conversing with it — an approach increasingly relevant in India’s urban fabric, where growth often arrives at the cost of erasure.
