Things to Keep in Mind as an Architecture Student 🏛️✏️

Studying architecture is not just about learning how to draw buildings. It’s about developing a mindset—creative, analytical, and resilient. Whether you're just starting or already knee-deep in studio critiques, here's a guide to help you not just survive, but thrive in architecture school.

1. It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint 🏃‍♀️

Metopheric Professional Marthon

Architecture school is intense and long, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Deadlines can feel endless, and burnout is real. But pace yourself. You don’t have to peak in your first year. Growth in architecture happens slowly and steadily—through repetition, feedback, and exploration.

Pro tip: Stay curious and consistent. The journey is more important than a perfect portfolio.

2. Sketch, Don’t Just Click ✍️

Coneptual Sketches from an Architect

With all the digital tools available today, it’s easy to go straight to software. But sketching remains a powerful thinking tool. It helps you visualise faster, communicate better, and connect with your ideas more intuitively.

Remember: Sketchbooks are like design diaries, they show how your brain works, not just what you produce.

3. Design Is More Than Aesthetics 🧠

Thinking Visually in Colors, Grapics and Renders

Architecture isn’t just about making things look good; it’s about making them work, feel right, and serve a purpose. Learn to balance form, function, and context. Ask questions like: Who’s going to use this space? How will they feel in it?

Good design is empathetic, not just impressive.

4. Critique Is Your Best Friend (Even When It Hurts) 💬

Learning to take Criticisim

Juries can be intimidating. But critiques aren’t meant to tear you down—they’re meant to sharpen your thinking.

Learn to distinguish between your work and your worth.

Ask questions. Take notes. Observe how others receive feedback too. Thick skin, open mind. That’s the secret.

5. Don’t Just Study Buildings—Study People, Cities, Nature 🌍

Explore the world

Architecture doesn’t exist in isolation. Get into the habit of studying the world around you. Travel when you can, explore your own city deeply, look at how spaces evolve and interact with climate, history, and culture.

Inspiration is everywhere. Great architects are great observers first.

6. Time Management = Sanity ⏰

Time Management

You’ll always have more to do than time allows. Learn to prioritise. Don’t wait for perfection to begin. Break big tasks into smaller ones, and give yourself realistic deadlines. Pulling all-nighters may seem heroic, but rest leads to better creativity.

Balance studio with sleep. Your brain will thank you.

7. Collaborate, Don’t Compete 🤝

Team working together

Architecture school can sometimes feel like a competition, but the truth is, collaboration gets you further. Share resources, ideas, and failures. Support each other through stressful weeks. You’ll learn just as much from your peers as from professors.

You’re not building your career against others, you’re building it with them.

8. Learn the Tools, But Master the Thinking 🧰

Discussion among professionals

Software comes and goes. New tools arrive every year. But what stays timeless is your design thinking. Use tools as enablers, not crutches. Focus on building skills like problem-solving, storytelling, and presentation.

Be a designer first, then a technician.

9. Your Portfolio is a Story, Not a Dump Folder 📚

Portfolio Creation

Start documenting your process early. Don’t wait until the final year to assemble your portfolio. Take progress shots, note down design thoughts, and curate your best work. Remember, quality > quantity.

A portfolio isn’t just a collection—it’s a narrative of your evolution.

10. Keep the Passion Alive

Professional reflecting on his life choices

Amid deadlines, critiques, and chaos, don’t lose touch with yourself. Pause and check in with why you chose architecture. Make time to explore styles, attend lectures, watch documentaries, visit exhibitions, or even meme your way through stressful nights. The love for design is what carries you through.

When in doubt, build something—even if it's just an idea.

In Closing…

Being an architecture student is about building more thanout or just models and drawings. You’re building your voice, your process, and your perspective.

Take it seriously, but don’t forget to enjoy it.
