Important Dates: The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination in India that allows aspirants to pursue higher education and obtain employment in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). 

Below is some key information that, at a glance, if you are thinking of applying in the GATE 2026 Exam this year. 

IMPORTANT DATES FOR GATE 2026

Note: 

• A candidate can appear for one or two papers this year, given it does not clash with another choice of exam. Four dates are given for the exam, one in the morning and one in the evening. This time, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Paper is also an option for those who want to gon into that field. 

• GATE score obtained by the candidate will remain valid for THREE years from the date of announcement of results.

• For 2026, IIT Guwahati is the organising institute. 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA TO APPEAR FOR THE EXAM 

• Candidates who are in their third year or above students enrolled in any undergraduate degree program. (B.Arch - 5-year course, Naval Architecture 4-year course, Planning - 4-year course.)
• Candidates who have already graduated (and cleared all backs).

Note: 

Individuals with backlogs (failed subjects) in their qualifying degree can apply for the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam. However, they must clear all backlogs before the GATE counselling process begins. Essentially, while you can take the exam with backlogs, you'll need to have them cleared to be eligible for admission through GATE. 

• Any candidate fulfilling the above-mentioned criteria is eligible to appear for GATE 2026.
• Candidates pursuing any higher degree or in possession of a degree higher than that mentioned in the table below will be allowed to appear for GATE 2026.

HOW TO APPLY FOR GATE 2026

1. Visit the official GATE 2026 website (by IIT Guwahati).
2. Register with your email ID and phone number.
3. Fill in personal and academic details.
4. Upload required documents – photograph, signature, and eligibility proof.
5. Select your paper(s) and exam centre preferences.
6. Pay the application fee online and save the confirmation page.

GATE EXAM 2026: What’s New?

• Two new subjects –There are now two new subjects: Geomatics Engineering (GE) and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NM). Thus, the total number of subjects has increased to 30.

• In another newly introduced change, students applying for the GATE Exam 2026 can also opt for two different papers from the prescribed set of combinations. The information regarding the two paper combination will be updated soon on the official website. Stay tuned. 

• The eligibility criteria to appear for GATE-2026 have been relaxed from a minimum 10+2+4 (ongoing) to a minimum 10+2+3 (ongoing), enabling even those in the third year of their undergraduate studies to appear for the examination.
