You’ve modelled a cosy bedroom in SketchUp. Now it’s time to turn those lines into ambience—warm lamp glow, soft textures, realistic shadows. That’s where the V‑Ray extension steps in. But here’s the catch: Rendering won’t fix broken models—it highlights them. Missed faces, wrong normals, sloppy grouping—it all shows. This guide takes you step by step: from SketchUp cleanup to a final polished render. You’ll learn how to align basic modelling principles with V‑Ray’s interface to create a professional-looking interior.

1. Before You Render: The Foundations of a Clean SketchUp Model 

  1. Check Face Orientation • Select View → Monochrome. Reverse faces (right‑click) as needed so that white sides face out. V‑Ray reads only front faces for rendering.
  2. Group Everything • Isolate objects—bed, bedside table, lamp—as separate groups or components. This helps when applying individual materials or lighting.
  3. Keep the Model Near Origin • Models far from SketchUp’s origin (0,0,0) can distort camera and lighting calculations. Use Zoom Extents and, if needed, move by snapping the axis.
  4. Remove Unnecessary Detail • Simplify geometry in round objects like lamps or knobs. Delete hidden lines and extra faces to optimise speed and reduce clutter.
  5. Name Your Components • Rename groups/components (bed, duvet, pillow‑soft) using SketchUp's Outliner or Entity Info. It saves heaps of time in material assignment and light creation in V‑Ray.

2. Setting Up Your Scene in SketchUp 

  • Build the Bedroom Shell: Walls, floor, and ceiling. Remember to group each surface, so they can each have distinct materials later.
  • Add Furniture & Accessories: Bed, pillows, duvet, lamp, rug, shelves. Convert repeated items like pillows into components and use instances to optimise file size.
  • Insert Windows or Curtains: Let natural light in. Group these separately, ensuring windows are transparent faces (glazed glass) grouped in their own component.
  • Adjust Camera Settings: Choose a camera view that captures the full space. For interior, use a 35 mm focal length or similar, with an eye‑level height of around 1.6–1.7 m to mimic human perspective.

3. Preparing for V‑Ray

Once your SketchUp file is clean and scene‑packed:

  1. Open the V‑Ray Asset editor — first time it may take a few seconds.
  2. Choose a Visual Style — start with the Interior preset. You can customise later.
  3. Turn on Important Settings:
  4. GI (Global Illumination) using Brute Force + Light Cache is reliable for interiors.
  5. Use Gamma 2.2, Standard Colour Map.
  6. Add Render Elements (optional) — such as VRayLighting, VRayReflection, etc., if you plan further post‑production in Photoshop.

4. Lighting: Where the Mood Begins

1. Natural Light through Windows

- Use a V-Ray Sun-sky sustem. Drag the sun icon, rotate until window-light floods the room. 

- In the Directional Light (Sun Light) settings, increase Multiplier to 2-4 to brighten the interior. 

2.  Artificial Lighting 

- Place a V-Ray Rectangle Light inside the lamp shade.

      + Size it to match the shade.

      + Colour temperature: 3000 K for a warm feel. 

      + Multiplier: start with 5, then adjust later. 

3. Interior Fill Light 

 - A low-intensity Sphere Light in the ceiling can add soft ambient fill. 

 - Keep it subtle (Multiplier around 1) to avoid flattening the mood. 

In V-Ray, lighting adjustments are iterative-render previews, tweak, repeat.

5. Applying Realistic Materials 

Open the Material section in V‑Ray Asset Editor:

1.  Create a Custom Wood Material (Floor)

  • Low reflection, refraction enabled. Choose VRayMtl, assign a hardwood texture.
  • Roughness: 0.4–0.5 for subtle sheen. 
  • Apply via drag‑and‑drop onto your floor group.     

2.  Soft Textile (Duvet & Pillows)

  • Use fabric textures with bump or normal maps.
  • Roughness high (~0.8) for less reflection.

3.  Painted Walls

  • Choose a neutral colour (e.g., off‑white or pastel).
  • Low reflection, slight bump (5–10%) for depth.

4.  Transparent Glass (Windows)

  • Low reflection, refraction enabled.
  • Tint slightly blue or grey to mimic real glass.

5.  Ceramic or Metal Lamp Base

  • Glossy finish: roughness 0.2–0.3
  • Add a Reflection map if available for realism.

Tip: Use SketchUp tags to toggle visibility of specific materials while designing render variations.

6. Camera Settings and Render Output 

In the Render Output tab:

  • Aspect Ratio: 16:9 or 3:2 works well.
  • Resolution: Begin with 800×600px for tests; final render at 1920×1080px.
  • Render Elements: Enable VRayDenoiser to smooth noise; it speeds up the workflow.
  • Depth of Field (Optional):

                      -  Activate in V‑Ray Camera tab.

                      -  Use f‑stop around 4–5 and focus distance on a key element (the duvet or bedside table) to get a pleasing blur in depth.

7. Rendering Iteratively: Test > Tweak > Finalise

  1. Test Render: Use region render on a quarter of the scene with reduced settings (ID 1-Draft).
  2. Adjust Lighting: Does the duvet look flat? Increase the lamp’s rectangular light.
  3. Tweak Materials: Too shiny? Raise the roughness slightly.
  4. Re‑render: Keep working until the scene feels cohesive.
  5. Final Render: Set quality to High, resolution to 1920×1080px.
  6. Save as PNG. If using render elements, export separately (lighting, diffuse, reflections) for post‑production polish.
8. Post‑Production Polish 

(Optional but powerful.)

  1. Import all channels into Photoshop.
  2. Merge lighting and reflection layers to enhance ambience.
  3. Add subtle vignetting (2–5% radius) to focus on the bed.
  4. Colour grade—slightly warm (+10 Kelvin), subtle contrast.
  5. Sharpen using a High Pass filter at 2–3px radius.
  6. Final touch: Add a vignette to guide the eye inward.

9. Final Checklist Before You Hit Publish 

  • Geometry cleaned & grouped
  • Materials correctly applied
  • Balanced lighting
  • Realistic camera framing/depth of field
  • Denoised and sharpened final render
