Rhino & Grasshopper Course Eligibility: Do You Need Coding or 3D Modelling Experience?

You don't need prior coding or 3D modelling experience to join Kaarwan's Rhino & Grasshopper Certification. Week 1 starts with Rhino from the ground up, so if you've never opened it, you're not behind. You're on day one, same as everyone else. People arrive from three very different places: B.Arch students who know AutoCAD and little else, working architects who want parametric skills, and interior designers who've heard of Grasshopper but aren't sure it's meant for them. This guide goes through each starting point, what to prep before Week 1, and where the honest limits are.

The course is led by Jerwin Geo, a computational designer and visiting lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire. Week 1 is titled "Complete Rhino Modelling from Beginner to Advance."

Short Answer: Who Can Join This Course

If you study or work in architecture, interior design or a nearby design field, and you're comfortable on a laptop, you can join. Coding isn't a gate. Prior Rhino isn't a gate either.

What matters more is whether you're curious about how geometry behaves, and whether you can sit through a slow first few days without panicking. Most people can. The Advanced Rhino & Grasshopper Certification runs 6+2 weeks, live online, and the next batch starts on 7th Nov 2026. If you want the week-by-week picture first, here's a full walkthrough of what the course covers week by week.

Here's how it breaks down by background:

Your backgroundWhat the course already coversWhat to prep
Architecture student, no software beyond AutoCADWeek 1: Rhino interface, surfaces, NURBS, SubD, renderingInstall Rhino, practise viewport navigation
Working architect (Revit, SketchUp, AutoCAD)Week 1 as a fast pass, then Grasshopper from Week 2Get used to Rhino's command line and NURBS thinking
Interior designerWeek 1 geometry, Week 2 onwards Grasshopper, Week 6 fabrication and documentationDraw and edit curves, extrude and loft simple forms
Career-switcher from an adjacent fieldThe full 6+2 weeksBasic file handling, patience for Week 1

Architecture Students: What You Already Know That Helps

India produces a lot of architects. Council of Architecture figures quoted at a 2020 industry webinar put it at 469 colleges sanctioned for B.Arch, around 24,000 seats a year, and roughly 1.06 lakh registered architects. Now picture a portfolio pile landing in a firm's inbox in Pune or Bengaluru. Plenty of AutoCAD. Plenty of SketchUp. Plenty of similar facades.

That's why students get curious about Grasshopper. And the worry is nearly always the same: "I've barely used Rhino, and I'm not a coding person."

Good news, you don't have to be. You already think in plans, sections and massing, and that's most of the mindset. Grasshopper just asks you to describe the rule behind a form instead of drawing it once. When that clicks, parametric architecture stops feeling like magic and starts feeling like a tool you own. Third year, fourth year, thesis year, all fine. Thesis year is probably the best, because you've got a live project to try it on.

Working Architects: Why This Course Fits Mid-Career

You're probably in Revit or AutoCAD all day, and deadlines don't care about your learning goals. Somewhere in the last year, someone said "can we see a parametric option?" and you nodded and figured it out later.

This group often gets the most out of a structured course, because you already know what a good roof or facade should do. You just need a faster way to test twenty versions instead of two. The format is live online, so there's no career break involved. Week 1 will feel quick if you've touched Rhino before. Week 2 is where Grasshopper properly begins.

Wondering where it leads? Where this skill set leads is a decent look at roles that sit between design and computation.

Interior Designers: Where Grasshopper Applies to Your Work

Interior designers often assume this is an "architects' thing." It isn't.

Think of a jaali screen, a patterned false ceiling, a feature wall with repeating perforations, a pendant layout that follows a curve. All of that is rule-based geometry. Change one number and the whole pattern updates. That's Grasshopper.

Some weeks lean architectural. Week 5 covers environmental analysis, for example. But the logic carries across scales. So if you've been searching for a Grasshopper course for non architects, this one doesn't lock you out. You'll just apply it to ceilings and screens instead of facades.

Do You Need to Know Coding?

No. Grasshopper is visual. You connect boxes with wires, and nobody makes you type code.

If you can follow a flowchart, you can read a Grasshopper definition. Week 2 builds on exactly this, starting with foundational Grasshopper for parametric design.

Rhino 8 does support Python and C# inside Grasshopper, if you want to write custom scripts later. That's optional, and people usually pick it up after the basics, not before.

What about 3D modelling? Not a hard requirement either, but let's be honest. If you've never used any 3D software, Week 1 will feel dense. It covers the interface, surfaces and geometry, NURBS and surface continuity, SubD modelling and rendering. A few evenings of practice beforehand makes it much smoother.

What to Brush Up on Before Week 1

  • Install Rhino 8. McNeel offers a free 90-day evaluation. Saving and plugins stop working after that. Since the batch starts 7th Nov, start your trial close to that date so it covers the full programme.
  • Learn to move around. Orbit, pan, zoom and switch viewports without thinking.
  • Draw and edit curves. Lines, arcs, polylines and control points.
  • Make surfaces. Try Extrude and Loft on simple shapes.
  • Set up layers. Name them, colour them, keep them tidy.
  • Check your laptop. Windows 10/11 or macOS, with at least 8 GB RAM recommended. More helps once models get heavy.

Check this before enrolling: ask the counsellor which Rhino version the batch uses and how licensing works during the course.

If you meet the criteria above, here's the full course breakdown and how to enroll. Still deciding? The Parametric Modelling in Rhino masterclass is a lower-commitment way to try it first

Three Things to Take Away

  1. Coding isn't required. Grasshopper is visual, and you build logic with nodes.
  2. Prior Rhino isn't required either, but a few evenings of practice before Week 1 helps a lot.
  3. Student, architect or interior designer, eligibility isn't the barrier. Showing up for Week 1 is.

FAQs

Do I need a design degree to join a Grasshopper course?

Kaarwan's course is aimed at architecture and design students and professionals. A degree isn't what decides whether you'll cope. Comfort with Rhino basics and regular practice matter more. If you're coming from a non-design background, book a quick counsellor call first.

Is coding knowledge required for Grasshopper?

No. Grasshopper uses a visual, node-based editor. Python or C# scripting is an optional extra you can learn later.

Can a civil engineer take a Rhino & Grasshopper course?

Yes, if you're happy to learn Rhino from the basics and you're curious about form and geometry. Roofs, facades and structural forms all run on the same geometry logic. The course is pitched at architecture and design learners, so a counsellor call helps you check the fit.

What software do I need before starting?

Rhino 8, which includes Grasshopper. You can try it free for 90 days from McNeel's site. Confirm the exact version with the Kaarwan team.
