For wooden pergolas, posts are pressure-treated to resist rot and termites, and joinery may involve concealed bolts or mortise-and-tenon cuts. The precision of column alignment is critical as it dictates the structural geometry and rhythm of the pergola.

2. Beam Support: 

Resting on the columns, beams form the main horizontal framework that defines the span and proportion of the pergola. Beams are usually bolted, strapped, or seated on top of posts with steel brackets to resist wind uplift and horizontal thrust. Their cross-section sizes depend on span length and the load of secondary members like joists and slats. In timber pergolas, beams may be chamfered or detailed with decorative end cuts, while in steel or concrete systems they provide a more minimal aesthetic. Structurally, beams distribute loads evenly across posts, creating stability for the overall skeleton.

Running perpendicular to the beams, joists act as secondary framing members. They divide the pergola into bays and support the arrangement of slats or lattice elements above. Joists are typically seated on beam notches, attached with joist hangers, or bolted directly for stronger fixity. Their spacing can be adjusted to achieve desired shading density—closer spacing increases coverage while wider spacing allows more light. In addition to functionality, joists add rhythm and depth, giving pergolas their characteristic layered shadow play.

Slats, also known as purlins or battens, form the topmost layer of the pergola. They are usually laid perpendicular to joists and determine the shading quality and architectural expression of the structure. Common materials include hardwood, engineered timber, aluminum, or polycarbonate sheets for partial weather protection.
