I Took the Skill Test — Now What? (Skilltest Series Part 2)

You took the first step — now let’s figure out where to go from here.

Once you’ve taken the test, you may find yourself leaning toward a design direction — maybe architectural writing, or BIM, or interiors.

But what do you do with that information?

Here’s a simple guide to move from insight to action — without overwhelm.

1. Understand What Your Result Actually Means

This isn’t a career label. It’s a direction. Think of it as your inner GPS saying, “You seem to enjoy [systems/visuals/storytelling/detailing]. Want to explore that further?”

Your result doesn’t lock you in — it opens a door. So ask yourself: - Does this role sound exciting, or just unfamiliar? - Do I lack the skill or the confidence? - Can I picture myself enjoying the process, not just the output?

2. Identify the Gaps Holding You Back

Many of us don’t explore new roles simply because we don’t have the tools. It’s not a lack of talent — it’s a lack of exposure.

For example: - Like the idea of computational design? You might not know Grasshopper yet, but that’s what courses are for. - Interested in interiors but never worked on one? You probably just need the right visualisation software and some project breakdowns.

Not knowing is not a problem. Not exploring is.

3. Pick One Skill That Opens That Door

You don’t have to learn everything at once. Choose one software or concept that strengthens your foothold in that role.

Some starting points: - For BIM Architects – Learn Revit and Navisworks (Kaarwan’s BIM Course covers this)

- For Interior Designers – Start with SketchUp and Enscape or Photoshop

- For Computational Designers – Begin with Grasshopper or Dynamo

- For Architectural Writers – Practise writing with clarity, and learn InDesign for layout

- For Visualisers – Try experimenting with SketchUp Plugins, use different visualising softwares like Twinmotion, Lumion, or Enscape

Think of these not as “skills to master” — but as tools to start playing with.

4. Explore Studios or People in That Space

Look for architects and firms doing the kind of work you admire. See what tools they use, what roles exist, and how their teams are structured. Create a list:

- 3 studios you’d love to intern or work with

- 2 people to follow on LinkedIn or Instagram

- 1 project you want to replicate or learn from

This builds inspiration and realism — showing you what’s possible, and what’s required.

5. Don’t Rush. Real Growth is Layered

You don’t need to have it all figured out. What matters is that you’re not stuck anymore.

You’re not waiting to be told what to do. You’re exploring. Take that energy forward.

Try things.

Make small projects.

Learn from others. You’ll be surprised how quickly your direction becomes a destination.

What to Do After the Skill Test

·       Read your result like a suggestion, not a sentence.

·       Notice what interests you — and what’s stopping you.

·       Pick one software or skill to begin.

·       Follow people and studios in that space.

·       Be patient, but intentional.
